Ebook About
In this inspiring coming-of-age memoir, a world-renowned astrophysicist emerges from an impoverished childhood and crime-filled adolescence to ascend through the top ranks of research physics. “You’ll encounter one extraordinary turn of events after another, as the extraordinary chess player, puzzle solver, and occasional grifter works his way from grinding poverty and deep despair to worldwide acclaim as a physicist.”—Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society Navigating poverty, violence, and instability, a young James Plummer had two guiding stars—a genius IQ and a love of science. But a bookish nerd is a soft target, and James faced years of bullying and abuse. As he struggled to survive his childhood in some of the country’s toughest urban neighborhoods in New Orleans, Houston, and LA, and later in the equally poor backwoods of Mississippi, he adopted the persona of “gangsta nerd”—dealing weed in juke joints while winning state science fairs with computer programs that model Einstein’s theory of relativity. Once admitted to the elite physics PhD program at Stanford University, James found himself pulled between the promise of a bright future and a dangerous crack cocaine habit he developed in college. With the encouragement of his mentor and the sole Black professor in the physics department, James confronted his personal demons as well as the entrenched racism and classism of the scientific establishment. When he finally seized his dream of a life in astrophysics, he adopted a new name, Hakeem Muata Oluseyi, to honor his African ancestors. Alternately heartbreaking and hopeful, A Quantum Life narrates one man’s remarkable quest across an ever-expanding universe filled with entanglement and choice.

Book A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars Review :

This book is the inspiring autobiography of Hakeem Oluseyi, a brilliant astrophysicist and professor that had a very difficult childhood. The book is divided into four parts with a total of 83 chapters, so each chapter is fairly short.Throughout Oluseyi's descriptions of the many different places he lived in as a child, you can see the flashes of his curious mind and his intellectual ability. He describes his early fascination with taking things apart to see how they worked, and how it sometimes resulted in beatings when he wasn't able to put things back together correctly. His skill at logic problems, his ability to count cards, and his interest in chess are each briefly mentioned as small background details; as he recalls the often dangerous environments that he grew up in. As he navigated the challenges of switching between city life and country life, he always maintained his healthy curiosity and problem-solving abilitiesIt seems like one of the biggest life-changing influences for Oluseyi came when his mother bought him the World Book encyclopedia set, and he read about Einstein and relativity. He describes his mind being blown by this exciting new way to think about time and space, and the enthusiasm he had to think through the implications of Einstein's discoveries. I found these chapters to be particularly inspiring, because they demonstrate how important reading can be for children; and how sometimes you can escape from the horrors of the real world in an intellectually stimulating book.In later chapters Oluseyi describes other major events that shaped his life: learning to play the tuba, learning to use a computer and programming in BASIC, winning the science fair, joining the navy, the challenges of college life, marriage, studying at Stanford, dealing with drug addiction, and eventually becoming a father. You really get a comprehensive view of his life, and an appreciation for all of the obstacles he had to overcome. It is an interesting and unusual path that Oluseyi describes in this book, and I enjoyed reading it. I suspect that readers that share some of the same experiences might appreciate this book more than others, as some might not connect with the stories as much. I'm grateful that he chose to share this much about his life, and hopefully others can learn from his experiences.
Hakeem Oluseyi takes the reader through his journey from a chaotic childhood lived in poverty to achieving a PhD in physics at Stanford. His central message perhaps is that however remote one's goals may be, they always remain possible. Oluseyi's life takes numerous turns, as he often struggles to make good decisions. However, he stubbornly pursues his love of physics. He frequently has to overcome discrimination, both subtle and overt, and has to define his identity in a field dominated by Whites. He does give credit to those teachers and mentors who recognized his talents, and encouraged him. My only criticism of this book is that I wanted to see more about his post graduate career in astrophysics.
